About Us

A church belonging to Christ:

At Washington Street, we simply want to be a church that belongs to Christ, nothing more, nothing less. That is, we seek to be non-denominational in nature with the Bible as our only guide. We believe it is the Word of God and our sole authority in matters of spirituality and life.

The Bible teaches us that our greatest duty is to love God and to love our neighbor. To that end we assemble each Sunday to Worship together and to grow in this relationship with God. Our worship assemblies are simple, but uplifting… inviting, but challenged and all are welcome. Throughout the week we challenge one another to live out this duty in service to others. The Bible further teaches that Jesus was and is the Son of God and that it is through Him we can have a full and abundant relationship with God. We want to share that news with anyone that will listen!

We would love to have you join us! To learn more, take a look around our website and don’t be afraid to contact us by clicking the mail icon at the bottom of the page!

Our Mission:

“Seeking… Serving… Sharing… CHRIST!”

Our history

The Washington Street congregation traces its earliest history to around 1835 when the McKinney and Goodrich families moved to Fayetteville and having been influenced by thinkers in the American Restoration Movement, they began the work of establishing a congregation here.  As far as is known, this congregation met and grew until the Civil War erupted and caused many to scatter.

In 1864 the congregation was revived and built a building on our present site at the corner of Washington Street and Franklin Avenue in 1870.  We have met continuously since that time, rebuilding twice—once in 1890 and again in 1952 after tornadoes destroyed those two church buildings.  Other additions have been added through the years to enhance our ministry capabilities but our rich history is truly defined by the great men and women of faith who have been members of this congregation and by the God whom we serve.

Today, we stand on the shoulders of this great “cloud of witnesses” who have served God’s purposes in their time and passed that responsibility down to us.  We look forward to a great future as we continue to seek, serve and share Christ with Fayetteville, greater Lincoln County and the world.
